These songs were triumphant in overcoming a course, crude and regime of suppression and oppression of native spirituality. Amazing states of spiritual freedom were able to evolve in secret meetings. Away from the guise of their suppressors freedom arose. Members of a group stronger then their fickle oppressors sang the harmonies that spontaneously arose in a community of faith.

Where Christian doctrine had been used previously to enslave tow it emerged as a truth force with a sharp edge of liberation. Christianity become triumphant only when it it challenged those who preached forgiveness and long suffering to practice and live out what they taught.
