Church and Postmodern CultureThen at the end of
the rational age it is of little surprise that we are all left here all
fragmented agreeing to disagree. Fragmentation has become the norm and
hardly anyone seems to agree with a way forward. Modernism brought us
the industrial revolution and improved abilities to access commodities
but it seems to have also have disconnected us to ourselves. We see the
holocaust of wars as the result of these mass modernizing efforts and
we seek refuge again in the personal perspectives. We seek to know God
not through objective knowledge but through our own personalized
interpretations. Never before in history had we known as much about the
SCIENCE, ETHICS, and the consciousness of the SELF than in the modern
age.
In the mythic age these three were undifferentiated and in the magic age all came from completely unknowable God, through the rational age we built up a wealth of theology that made it possible to know God through these three. But like the in the towers of Babel our hearts turned cold, and instead of agreeing to disagree we tear at the flesh of Gods modern prophets. We say it is all about Science or it is all about the "Me" an my Personal interpretation and there is not any One truth. God has steadily revealed himself through the modern age and through all all ages but never in history have we had the chance to know God as intimately as we do now.We have such a great wealth of theology in the church, ethics, and culture and science but we have taken to factional inn fighting in the name of our favored discipline. The most widely criticized aspects of this fragmentation has come about in the impersonal nature of Science. You can think of a gas chamber as a good metaphor for this. Hitler and Nazi Germany tattooed each prisoner with a number to show that hey were not part of the great arian "race". If this was the result of "agreeing to disagree" than the world uniformly decided it was time agree to agree instead. And the age after the modern age was born. Never again were we going to get things wrong like we did before. If we were going to "agree to agree" we had to to make some rules. One world became the new catch cry and "whatever" became the religion to live by to make it possible. Despite the fact that rationalism had delivered up to us on a silver platter the understanding that perceptions of the self come out of a context we were going to do it our way. Instead of adhering to the understanding of the message that was brought to us through the age of modernity we opted for the material, objective reality. We opted for the map of the world that we had created through science and the objectification of the world. We decided that truth was what we could see and touch and observe with our eyes, and it was sensual and it was nice like nature and that was what God was like. They failed to see that reality ran deeper than the representations you can map out through science or through ideas such as capitalism. And avant guard movements and things like communism were simply mirror images of a very material and objective reality. The idea that these world-views are created with in the context our cultures and that our selves are constructed within cultures is only beginning to become understood. All the implications of this understanding is what has brought about all the postmodern interpretations of spirituality. When you have global warming and people are putting other people in gas chambers it becomes more and more difficult to say that what god is like. When you have Holy Wars and fragmentation on all fronts it gets harder and harder to say that God is in the science that started out as an attempt to prove the reality of God. And instead of people rushing to the representation side of the boat we are starting to see people rushing back to the Unity perspective. People are starting to say "I want to agree to agree with you" whoever you are. And when they run into Ken Wilber who is pushing Buddhism and every other thing imaginable they say, "I am going to agree to agree with you too". And it all ends up one big happy family of embracing other people perspectives except for one thing. They have forgotten themselves. They have thrown out the baby of modernity out with the bath-water. Loading...
