 Postmodern Christianity

There has been a lot of outrage in conservative circles recently about the inclusion of Ken Wilber endorsements in an Emergent Church leaders book entitled Velvet Elvis. Wilber is a central figure in the New Age movement and has a foot in a few different Eastern and Western traditions. In fact Wilber's work is spearheading a movement of evolutionary consciousness that wants to save the world and get us all to our own versions of heaven. Ironically however the book entitled A Brief History of Everything has a large portion of it devoted to what Wilber calls spiritual flatland. This is a critique on postmodern relativist times when we are all entitled to our own point of view, and all points of view are regarded as equal. There are good aspects that came out of this age but the problem is we forgot about following the path of truth because every one is seen as equal. This spiritual environment is called flatland because it denies the existence to an ascending path to know God. The ascending path is the path of knowing God through interpretation of the truth of God, however God may present himself to you.

As Christians you may say at this point, "There is only one God and one way to know God and that is through Jesus Christ my savior". Well with this I would have to agree with you %150 percent. The interesting thing about Wilber's work though is not his promotion to other religions it is his uncanny ability to communicate and understand the issues of post modernity from a rational perspective. Then you or I  can say that while I don't admire Ken Wilber's choice of religion we can respect his right to choose for himself that opinion. And Ken Wilber may say, "Ricky, I see that you believe there is only one way to know God and I respect your right to have that opinion". He might also add "that he thought I was being a little tribe centered. For Ken a more enlightened position is one that is less centered on the Self. A mythic world view is more than a magic world view and a rational world view is more evolved than a mythic world view and on it goes. You can see from Wilber's work that the problems facing Christianity are little different from the attack all all things that are not measurable in an objective scientific way, or from the counter cultures such as communism that mirror these ways.

Boomeritis is the term used to describe the indifference towards spiritual depth. The experience is the same weather Jew, Christian or Buddhist. Boomeritis was there when Jesus stirred up a storm by claiming, He and the father are One, Claiming there is a better way to God and that way is him.
