Postmodern Discipleship and Evangelism

Postmodern Discipleship and Evangelism 'Sermon'

The problem was that we thought we got that good a representing God in the physical world that we thought we did not need him anymore. The Tower of Babel built we went about removing the other aspects of God that are integral to our spiritual journey. If we can build this great structure to reach up into the sky and reach god than what do we need God for anyway. Well the truth is we do need God because in reality we despite what we think all we have built is a representation of what we have interpreted as God’s will and we have stopped making accurate interpretations of Gods will for our culture and ourselves when we abandoned the spiritual path to knowing God. That Spiritual Path is what I refer to as the middle path. To know God is to have more that an understanding of him only as an objective prepositional truth.

Here I have choices. I can either continue with the dialogue or put up my fingers in the sign of a cross and start yelling "Get behind me Satin". And seeing as my role here is to continue the work of Jesus, and not to condemn the world of judge the non-believer then I am inclined to continue the conversation.  This whole idea of agreeing to disagree of rationalism is the mutual understanding that we can agree to disagree was what the modern age was built on. We can agree to disagree and go on to pursue or individual destiny. Because Ken Wilber has his theology a little confused does not mean he is one of sharpest thinkers around when it comes to communicating the rationalist position and the problems of post modernity. I can agree to disagree with him on theology but may find insight when it comes to some of his thoughts on post modernity. Wilber rightly points out for example that the modern ration age bought about the end of slavery in most areas of the world. This is because the rational age bought the differentiation between the self, culture, and nature. For the first time we have been able to reduce these as separate these entities which has given us a lot of control and autonomy in the world.

What we do is start to use our new rational-world view to try to create a world in the image of God. We try to create heaven here on Earth. Which is all fine and good until we think that we have gotten that good at it. we think we have created the image of God on earth and we begin to worship it. But as it turns out, it was somewhat floored because we forgot the grace that made all this possible. And what in fact we have actually created is an image of our selves. Because the eyes we see out into the world with are always cast a subjective image of what we see. We look at God and create him in our own image, out of our own consciousness, but that consciousness is rooted in our culture. And while our culture is rooted in the rational age we are going to have a tendency to only see God in this Objective sense. We tend to see God as a representative truth because that is what our world-view has taught us to do. We have had a long period of people trying to prove the existence of God now and we seem more alienated from God as we ever have been throughout history. Surely some people know God.
