Spiritual growth and the right instinct

Right instinct, or the ability to respond in a fixed pattern of action pattern that serves ourselves and others is a beginning point for our journey into spirituality. Paul and others in the bible have spoken passionately of the war their body's waged against them. Is it possible or even preferable then to gain control over the instincts? And how to discern right instinct over un-serving maladaptive responses.

CS Lewis gave a great exposition during a WWII radio broadcast. He explains Instincts can make us want act in certain ways and shows a pathway to the right instincts. Say you see someone drowning and you have the conflicting desires to help out of herd instinct and to stay out of danger out of our instinct for self preservation. What decides is the third instinct because it is not any of these two, and if it tells the self preservation instinct to, "shut up" then it's making a choice. These choices we make are an example of the instincts that navigate us through our heroes journey, and help us to live out our own Spiritual-Self truth.

Lewis calls this conscious Moral Law. If there were only two instincts then the stronger of the two would monopolize. The moral right instinct helps to tell us which instinct to encourage to greater strength. We use it to wake up the herd instincts such love or compassion or sympathy which may not always come naturally. There is not a single instinct we can point to and say that is the good one. And that is the same rule applies with the levels of this web site. There is a time for love, a time to gather , and a time to cast away, and for any purpose know to man, and each colour gets to sing it's song.

The right instincts are the ones that create that sweet, sweat, music in the congregation. We need all of these instincts as an imbalance of these instincts can cause psychoses or neurosis or make us simply sound out of tune. Even love can bring us down if we look for it in all the wrong places. But the Moral Law instinct directs us on the true path and is not constructed by society in our classrooms, and in our culture which are subject to terrorism.

Sure the postmodernists get it right when they say it all comes out of culture, but some things are unchangeable. And part of what is unchangeable is your potential and the Spiritual Self Journey that you were always meant to take. Sure you can avoid it, but that will leave you as an empty shell of a person that has all the comforts Maslow's triangle has to offer. If your going to find your destiny you first need to accept their is a path for you to take. A path through your instincts may not yet have been trained for.

You can consider this the beginning of your training. The heroes journey on this website teaches us that some truth’s are universal across cultures. In totally disconnected cultures you may have the same stories and myths have evolved over time I guess they may have had some connection to the One true God of truth. Sure we may all sound a little different and spell colour, color differently, but if you drop a rock on your foot it is going to hurt all the same, because of the same physical laws.

Like these laws there a spiritual laws to the universe that remain true throughout the ages, and there are truths that that the self discovers on the spiritual journey. Smetimes these are regarded as your spiritual DNA.

There would be no question of truth or falsehood at all. In the same way, if the Rule of Decent Behavior meant simply 'whatever each nation happens to approve', there would be no sense in saying that any one nation had even been more correct in its approval than any other; no sense in saying that the world would ever grow morally better or morally worse."

This wisdom, She is better then jewels and all that you may desire. She is there, in those instincts the creator gives.

Love is the first right instinct. The Love is there to motivate us towards a higher spiritual journey. Love can create a safe home for spiritual development, a place to grow and share the joys of family life, blood family and the families we make through love bonds. The great selfish act is to reject the original love and the great selfless act of love. Little wonder attempts to buy love are such an insult to loves nature. This pride instinct may cause rejection of this love for selfishness is naturally the enemy of love. Love, misinterpreted, misused and misunderstood in the media and for temporary gain can also break lives. Love as the first wrong instinct can destroy the safe places love creates.
