Spiritual Gift of HospitalityThe spiritual gift of
hospitality as the ability to serve up a meal, lodging encourages
warmth in the church and the community. This is a most practical gift
of knowing how to recognize and deliver the desires and needs of others
and then go that little bit further to deliver a heart changing
experience. These people open their homes and their hearts with a
desire to make others welcome. In the same way we are kind and bring
even a glass of water to a stranger we may as well be doing the same to
Jesus. It is possible we are entertaining angels in the
process of this doing. This is the gift God gave us to keep it real, to
keep the service of Jesus real amongst the business of life. To slow
down and take the time out of your own schedule to serve others is what
God did in sending Jesus to Earth to serve us. This idea was explored
in Spirituality in the Mess of History by Eugine Paterson.
Hospitality
is the ordinary Christian way to keep sacrifice local and immediate. We
need to get it out of the heroics, this is just daily now. We all have
opportunities daily to be on both the giving and the receiving end of a
sacrificial life. Don't you think it is significant how much of Jesus
ministry is revealed to us in the context of a meal? Preparing, and
cooking, and serving, eating a meal are activities that underly
participation in the world of salvation. The form the church uses to
cultivate this life of sacrifice among us is holy communion. A meal,
hospitality, it draws us into the sacrifice of Christ and nurtures a
sacrificial life in us.
Hospitality is going that extra little bit further in sacrifice and service to make others believe they have a place in the Kingdom of heaven. When someone says, "I could never become a part of the body of Christ" the spirit of hospitality speaks up and says, "We are all sinners and none has a greater right of access than another on that grounds". What counts is that we are willing to serve and sacrifice as best we can with what we have got. Now this is what I have available and I am going to use it to make you more comfortable. You always have enough in your hands, close at hand to make someone more comfortable right now. The only difference is someone with the gift of hospitality is given to a life of serving others. At each stage their resources and capacity for hospitality is enhanced and a new way of finding the desire to sacrifice emerges. Have A Great Story About This Topic?
